While some people go their whole lives without ever meeting their neighbors, this doesn’t have to be the case with you. You and your neighbors can have a mutually beneficial relationship. Whether you’re new to the area, or have lived in the neighborhood for years, use these tips to get along with your neighbors.

Be Considerate

The first step to having a good relationship with your neighbors is to be a good neighbor yourself. Don’t play music loud or be noisy, especially at night. Keep your yard clean and well maintained. If you have dogs, make sure they don’t bark excessively, especially late at night. Your behavior can be a good example of what it means to be a good neighbor. Remember the Golden Rule: “Treat others how you want to be treated.”

Say Hello

When you see your neighbor outside, say hello! Ask them how they’re doing. A little small talk can go a long way with neighbors. There’s no rule that you need to be best friends, but it is a good idea to initiate contact to help create a friendly relationship with those around you. When a new neighbor moves in, make sure to introduce yourself and welcome them to the neighborhood.

Deal with Issues Directly

If you do find you have issues with your neighbors, whether it be noise, smells, or a dirty yard, it is best to deal with it yourselves as much as possible. First, talk to a friend who is objective to the situation. See if they think you are being unreasonable. If they think you have a good point, knock on your neighbor’s door and discuss your problems as calmly and reasonably as possible. Hopefully, if you have followed the first two steps, you have a good relationship with them already. Usually, people don’t realize they’re doing anything wrong. Simply pointing out the problem can can help alleviate the situation.

Look Out for Each Other

It is important to take care of those around you and look out for one another. If you see anything suspicious, whether it be an open garage door late at night, someone suspicious lurking around their yard, or their pet wandering around the neighborhood, do what you can to look out for your neighbors. They will appreciate it and hopefully return the favor. When you get along with your neighbors, you always have someone to take care of you and your home, even when you’re not there.

The best strategy when trying to get along with neighbors is to be a good neighbor. Hopefully, they will follow your example and be great neighbors themselves!
