Gunlock History

A man named William Hamblin (nicknamed Gunlock, as he was an expert with guns) settled here and built a cabin in 1857. A budding community was established on the Old Spanish Trail so that the residents could trade with people traveling on the trail. On a visit, George A. Smith named the place Gunlock in honor of its first settler.

In late 1861, Santa Clara Creek flooded, and the budding community was forced to move north to the "Black Ridge". This is where the current town is located. Gunlock town was able to carry on as a trade location, as visitors remained frequent, passing through the town on the Old Spanish Trail. The early settlement was located where the Gunlock Fields are, south of the current town.
